Meet: Idina Menzel As Elphaba
Wicked Witch of the West

Idina Menzel was born on May 30, 1971 in Long Island, New York. She grew up alongside her younger sister, Cara. During the mid-1990s, Menzel auditioned for the popular musical, Rent. After receiving the role, this became Menzel's debut performance. Her performance as Maureen Johnson earned her a Tony nomiation as Best Featuerd Actress in a Musical. In 1997, Menzel chose to move on to bigger and better things.

After Rent, Menzel starred in the originated role of Dorothy in Summer of '42 at Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut. Other successful roles following Dorothy included Sheila in NewYork Center Encores! production of Hair, Amneris in Aida and Kate in the Manhattan Theatre Clubs 2000 Off-Broadway production of Andrew Lippa's The Wild Party. Menzel went on to win a Drama Desk Award nomination for her sensational performance in The Wild Party.

In 2003, Menzel became the most popular wicked witch of the west as she earned the leading role of Elphaba in Broadway's hit musical, Wicked. Her third tolast performance as Elphaba in 2005 led to a small injury with a cracked broken rib. She was eventually replaced by Shoshana Bean.

Since her starring role, Menzel was seen in See What I Wanna See, where she received a Drama Desk Award and Drama League Award. Fans can also see Menzel in the hit fairytale movie, Enchanted, released winter 2007. Menzel plays the fiance of Patrick Dempsey who ultimately gets married but with a uniue twist.

Menzel is currently married to her co-star from the Broadway production of Rent, Taye Diggs.
